EXERCISE:
Consider two jobs, one that brought much enjoyment and one that you disliked very much.
Think about the job that you disliked and from the job characteristics listed below, choose
one that you feel was the cause of the dissatisfaction.
Consider the job you really enjoyed and made you feel good about the experience. Review the job characteristics
above and choose one that you feel was the cause of your satisfaction.
If
you're like most, you'll find that your check in the
dissatisfied column occurred in the rows A-E while your
check in the satisfied column most likely occurred in
the rows F-J.
Rows
A-E are "hygiene issues". These are basic,
maintenance kinds of issues that must be addressed
before you can address the issues (rows F-J) that really
influence your employees level of satisfaction and
motivation. Notice
that "money" is a hygiene issue, yet many
companies use money in the form of performance bonuses
and raises, hoping it will motivate employees and
provide a high level of satisfaction and
motivation. From the chart above we can see
that providing opportunities for achievement,
recognition and increased responsibility in addition to
providing opportunities for professional growth can be
MUCH more effective than bonuses and raises at
increasing your employee's level of satisfaction and
motivation. If
